If you’re looking up tips for getting the most out of your blog post, chances are you’ve just invested in a blog campaign. To get the best return on investment (ROI), let’s start by reviewing the basic purpose of a blog.
A blog has three functions by design. First, your blog is your soapbox. It is where you can speak about your values. Second, a blog is a venue for education. Share organizational information and engage with your audience directly. Third, a blog is a conduit to generate traffic. By consistently engaging and educating readers, you organically attract the right audience to your website.
So how can your blog get the right kind of traffic? We’ll tell you. Here are our ten tips for getting the most out of a blog post.
- 1. Link on LinkedIn
- 2. Share on Twitter
- 3. Upload to Facebook
- 4. Post on Instagram
- 5. Respond on Reddit or Quora
- 6. Pin it on Pinterest
- 7. Share with your network
- 8. Re-work into a newsletter
- 9. Turn it into a presentation
- 10. Create a freebie
1. Link on LinkedIn
The first tip to getting the most out of a blog post is to share it. Widely. Wondering how to promote your blog on social media? Increase blog traffic by putting your content in front of as many eyes as possible. Over time, the right people will see your blog. When loyal readership increases, that’s when you start doing numbers.
LinkedIn is an obvious place to start. For corporate social responsibility (CSR) teams, social enterprises (SEs), and nonprofit organizations (NGOs) LinkedIn is our default online network.
There are three ways to post a blog on LinkedIn.
- Link directly to your blog in a short post
- Copy + paste to create a new post on your LinkedIn page
- Start a LinkedIn newsletter – For those will over 150 followers, use LinkedIn’s Creator Hub to build your newsletter directly on the platform.
Maximize your social media outreach with engagement
Already posted on LinkedIn? Don’t forget to engage. When somebody comments on your post, write back. Thank them for their interest. What is one tip they learned from your post? Ask. Even if it’s a short exchange, interaction leads to more readers.
2. Share on Twitter
Time to tweet. Twitter lets you introduce your post in 280 characters and link to the blog. Since the reader will go to your website to read the full text, every click-through will increase blog traffic.
Donorbox recommends Twitter to nonprofits who aim to get fast messages out to an audience and hold authentic conversation. These are two behaviors that boost your position as a thought leader in your field.
Are you limited to one tweet? No. Social media apps report good results when you share the same post to social networks more than once. Have a killer blog post from 2 years ago? Re-post away. The second tweet may even outperform the first. Chances are that new people will see it the second time around. Unique readers on your blog means a better chance to increase your blog conversion rate.
Blog conversion rate
Your blog conversion rate (blog CVR) is a measure of how many visitors to your blog perform a desired action. For example, at Archer Impact we want to talk to potential clients as soon as possible. Based on experience, we are confident that a thorough explanation of our services leads to getting hired. To that end, we count receiving a message as a conversion, one of our most crucial KPIs. This is why we often link to our Contact Us page. If 10 people visit our blog in a day and one person contacts us, that’s a 10% conversion rate for the day. The more targeted your blog distribution, the higher your conversion rate will be.
3. Upload to Facebook
Before you drag us for being old-school with tips for getting the most out of a blog post (“nobody uses Facebook anymore”) check the facts. Although out of favor with younger internet users in the US, Facebook remains popular with adults around the world. In fact, 1.93 billion people actively spend time on FB every day. The majority of those users come from places outside the US such as India, Indonesia, and Brazil. Since we work with organizations in Latin America, we are big FB fans. If your work also involves international projects, you can’t afford to ignore this platform.
4. Post on Instagram
Wondering how to promote a blog article on Instagram? Start by understanding the platform. Instagram is a hyper-visual platform. Your Instagram post needs to be attractive enough to catch the eye of readers as they scroll.
There are multiple ways to post on Instagram:
- Post – a permanent 1×1 square-shaped post on your feed
- Reel – a permanent video post on your feed
- Story – a temporary video or photo post that disappears in 24 hours
- Story Highlight – save a Story to be featured on your profile page
- Live – send out a real-time video broadcast to followers
- Guide – create a set of posts around a theme
For the best results on IG, we recommend you adapt the content of your blog post to an Insta-friendly format. Create a unique image and caption it. Then link to the full post using Linktree in your bio. Check out how we do it.
5. Respond on Reddit or Quora
Reddit and Quora are online forums for answering questions. They have regular users and guests who can read discussions without signing in. Reddit has over 430 million monthly users while Quora boasts slightly less with 300 million per month. If you want to know how to promote your blog, consider becoming an active member on forums like these. A blog post with thought leadership content may be just the answer people are looking for. Your blog post will get a traffic boost for as long as your topic is trending.
6. Pin it on Pinterest
Pinterest is an online mood board platform. Users bookmark websites they like by creating virtual pins and saving them. Other users can browse existing pins and improve their popularity by re-pinning. Pinterest is most popular with women (though men do use it). This platform has an extremely high conversion rate. 61% of pinners have purchased items seen on Pinterest. Like with all social media, it’s important to consider the platform when planning how to increase website traffic. Don’t forget to adapt your content to perform well on Pinterest.
7. Share with your network
This wouldn’t be a good list of tips for getting the most out of your blog if we focused solely on social media. Social platforms get the word out, but old-fashioned networking works too.
Did you know you have a professional network off of LinkedIn? If it feels relevant, send a short email to someone you know personally. Alternatively, drop a link into your industry group chat.
Sharing a blog post with your networks IRL off social media hits differently. Your acquaintances pay extra attention. Reaching out 1:1 reinforces closer professional links better than an impersonal social media platform. Also, sharing resources keeps you active in the group. People will remember your name and organization at important moments. Traditional networking raises the social value of your professional interactions.
8. Re-work into a newsletter
Repurposing your blog content is a major way to squeeze the most out of every post. Vary the medium and re-work your blog post into a newsletter. At Archer Impact, we are fans of the newsletter format, as long as it stays short and sweet. We can’t stress enough how much we appreciate a clean inbox. You don’t need more than four small blurbs in a newsletter for it to be interesting and relevant.
Consider a newsletter with these four sections:
- introduction to a topic
- link to your blog post
- update on industry happenings
- featured bio on a client or partner
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
Increase SEO by building links to your site
Backlinks, or links from one website to a page on another website, is a major way that Google ranks good content. Linking your blog in a newsletter makes your blog appear more authoritative. By sharing it in a newsletter, your readers can easily find it when writing a future blog of their own. Encouraging backlinking in this way is a best practice for search engine optimization (SEO).
9. Turn it into a presentation
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, there has been a major shift from in-person to online video meetings. It has changed the way we collaborate at work. It has grown our geographic networking reach.
Did your CEO write a killer blog post last year that she can’t stop talking about? Time to pull it out of retirement and refresh that post by turning it into a presentation or webinar. Whether you use Google Slides, WebEx, or even Zoom, your blog content can be transformed into a powerful tool. One fantastic online presentation can be leveraged to build regular event registration or prepare you for an upcoming industry convention.
10. Create a freebie
Ah, the free online download or “freebie”. Freebies are one of our absolute favorite forms of content. Why? Simple–everyone likes free stuff. A freebie appeals to our sense of value. If you can format your blog post into a downloadable freebie, you’ve got an amazing branded product that your target audience will voluntarily circulate for you. Plus, backlinking opportunities galore.
Whenever our favorite organizations have freebies, we feel like a kid at Costco on a Sunday afternoon. PDF of 500 best SEO tips? Why thank you. White paper on the future of social impact measurement? Download now. PDF of 2022’s most exciting UN SDG projects? Don’t mind if I do.
Always adjust your call to action (CTA)
When you re-work your blog post for a new medium, remember to change your CTA to match. Did you make a presentation? Drop a link to your online calendar so participants can sign up for future events. Made a freebie for download? Restrict the download to people that subscribe to your newsletter. Even if they unsubscribe later, you create one chance to engage your target audience that you didn’t have before.
Circulate widely for ROI
Starting a new blog campaign is an investment in the future. Every organization wants to be sure of a solid return. The best way to see high ROI is to circulate your blog as much as possible to a well-targeted audience. Squeeze the most out of each and every post. Now that you know our tips for getting the most out of a blog post, surely a new blog campaign makes economic sense. Are you ready to make your blog work harder for you?
